College Street Fire 12-17-2009

On December 17th, 2009, crews were called to a reported working structure fire in the center of the city. The fire had originated in the garage due to a child playing with a lighter and once discovered the caretaker tried to extinguish before finally calling for help. Engine 1 arrived within 4 minutes to find a heavily involved 1 story residential structure. Crews pulled pre-connects and went to work while Engine 2 laid a 5" supply line. Crews had to work quick to knock down the fire in the garage and living area then pull ceiling to catch the fast moving fire. The roof had a metal roof over a shingled roof which didn't allow the fire to vent itself and kept a lot of heat and smoke inside. Ladder 1 arrived and performed vertical ventilation and conditions quickly improved on the interior of the house. The fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes and firefighters remained on scene for about 2 hours doing overhaul. All occupants were able to make it out of the house without injury. Units on the assignment were Engines: 1, 2, 6, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, Unit 202, 203, and Chief 101.
